Why do you think we as believers struggle with our sense of purpose?

I think it's a human tendency, even as believers, to get so caught up in the busyness of life that we forget what our primary focus should be. We focus on our kids, family, work and sometimes even our church work, etc., so much that we don't think about the real reason we have been called - To glorify God.

Everything we struggle with is the human sinner in us. In the first chapter Rick Warren states, "You may choose your career, your spouse, your hobbies and many other parts of your life, but you don't get to choose your purpose." Wouldn't it be better to listen and make the choices God has chosen and not the ones we want.

All I can say is when I get to meet Eve I wanna ask her "What were you thinking?"

I agree that we have so many distractions now days and that is Satan's plan to distract us from our focus on God. I find that the more I pray and try to commit my life to living the best Christian life I can, the more things Satan throws in my path as a stumbling block. Prayer is the time I feel closest to God, even though I know He is with me every step of the way. I think we need tools like this to keep bringing us back to our focus. I don't think there are any quick fixes.

It's so refreshing to know that God has a special purpose for each & everyone of us! Many times I get so bogged down in everyday life that I forget that. This course is a wonderful reminder of God's love, patience & unique design for all of our lives!

Thanks for the feedback! It sounds like the common thread is that we struggle with our sense of purpose because we can get so easily distracted by life--be it good things like family and church, or stuff that satan throws our way to get us off course. I would like to add that I think a big component in finding our sense of purpose is faith. What is faith? "It is the confident assurance that what we hope for is going to happen. It is the evidence of things we cannot yet see (Hebrews 11:1)." In our American society it is easy to live without God. Hell is minimized and even glamorized, God (if He is there) wants you to be happy, and it is relatively easy for us to provide for our needs and be self-reliant. Even as Christians, these forces of society can blind us from seeing the spiritual realities around us, even making it difficult for us to feel our "need" for God. It's all too easy to relegate Him to the role of "advisor" and turn to Him in times of need rather than striving to daily build a relationship and grow in holiness. If we truly believe our ultimate purpose and feelings of purpose come from God, we need Him to increase our faith--to give us eyes to see and ears to hear the spiritual realities of this life. We need to know His Word, and have the faith to take it as the ultimate reality and authority. As God becomes more real to us, I believe our sense of purpose will become much stronger.

On Day 4 Rick Warren makes the observation that, "The most damaging aspect of contemporary thinking is short-term thinking." It is sobering to think that every minute of my life will matter for eternity. When I don't have that view then I allow daily problems in life to overtake my focus and I REACT! I don't pray and think through daily situations and what God would have me do.

I don't think people in general like to think about consequences. Seeing that my minute by minute choices will have eternal consequences gives me a different view about how I need to go about seeking what God would have me do. Our culture emphasizes the here and now without thought to eternity, so that makes any self-made purpose short-sighted. God wants us as Christians to think of how our choices will impact eternity.
