Week 3: How do our emotions affect our walk with God, and how can we use them to grow?

I am an emotional being. I know that I need to get up when my alarm goes off in the morning so I can hit the gym. But I don't always feel like it. I know I should be limiting myself from fatty foods high in sugars. But it's been a long day, and I deserve the junk food. All of us our emotional beings. So how does that affect our walk with God? How do we relate to Him when we are second-guessing His sovereignty? What do we do when we know we haven't spent time with Him lately but are feeling lazy and would rather watch some TV? How about when God feels distant? Our emotions are a gift from God, but sometimes they can just seem to get in the way. How can our emotions help us grow closer to God? Feel free to comment on anything else from this week's reading too!

I found the chapter on worship to be quite convicting. I particularly see my lack of thoughtfulness in my prayers as I tend to pray basically the same way at meals and also with my boys. A few years ago my boys and I started notebooks using the alphabet to list attributes of God. But now they sit on the shelf. How can my boys learn a fresh approach to prayer and praise if I don't have one in my worship? I have actually been thinking for the past few months of the need to incorporate praying scripture over my boys - I just haven't started. Now God has given me more ideas that I am hoping to start this week as I look to my boys' futures and see the needs I should be praying for. We have specific days of the week when we pray at bedtime for our pastors, the ill, our government and military, missionaries, the persecuted, and Israel and the Jewish people. I need the same kind of daily plan for my boys'needs, like spiritual growth, future spouse, school, friends, career, etc. with a variety of scriptures and translations to go along with my prayers - offered to God with thoughtful praise. So now I need to love God with my strength and make the effort to study and follow through with the plan.
